Newly Available Symphonic Works by Yevhen Stankovych

The following works by Ukrainian master composer Yevhen Stankovych, formerly not widely available, have been newly engraved and published recently for audiences across the globe.

Yevhen Stankovych, not averse to expressing dramatic, riskier emotions in his music, composed the Holodomor Requiem (Ukranian Requiem) in 1992. This powerful composition for narrator, bass and mezzo-soprano soloists, two choruses, and orchestra memorializes the victims of the Ukrainian Famine of 1932-1933, an event that has been largely overlooked in the 20th Century and after. Stankovych expresses the sadness and despair uniquely through music in this setting of text by Dmytro Pavlychko until the work ends with a feeling of tranquility.  The work premiered in Kyiv in 1993.

Sinfonietta No. 1 by Yevhen Stankovch is subtitled “In Modo Collage.”

In composing Elegy in Memory of Stanislav Ludkevych, Yevhen Stankovych created a moving tribute to the Ukrainian composer and theoretician. Felix Krieger conducted the Kiev Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the work on January 14, 2024.

Yevhen Stankovych originally wrote the Ukrainian Poem for violin and piano in 1997 while living in Canada. He later scored it as Ukrainian Poem for Solo Violin and Chamber Orchestra.

This symphony for large orchestral forces by Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovych is subtitled “Dramatic.” Symphony No. 2 features an expanded percussion section, requiring at least five players. The composer intended it as an anti-war protest and a eulogy for those who perished or were forced to suffer in wartime.  The Kiev Symphony Orchestra performed the work on October 14, 2023.
