Description:

Alfred Robert Gaul (1837-1913) was an English composer, conductor, and teacher wrote predominantly choral music, in a simple style influenced by Mendelssohn and Spohr. His choral music was extremely popular in its era both in England and in the United States, with his most popular work, The Holy City, the most performed choral work in English history at the time of Gaul’s death. The sacred cantata The Holy City includes 16 numbers across two parts with text based on two hymns, a verse from Milton, three verses from the Te Deum, and scripture. It premiered at the Birmingham Musical Festival for which it was written on August 30th, 1882. The beautiful List! the cherubic host is the penultimate piece in the larger work. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.0: 2.0.0.0: Hp(2).Org: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Mix Chorus.
