Three Quotations (Suite for Band)

Composers:
  • Sousa, John Philip
Arrangers:
  • Rogers, R. Mark
Detailed Instrumentation: Concert Band
Duration: 14
Description:

John Philip Sousa’s catalog of compositions is much broader and more diverse than is generally known. In addition to 136 marches, he composed more than a dozen operettas, four concert overtures, several sets of incidental music and humoresques, many pieces in dance forms (including waltzes, gavottes, galops, and fox-trots), and more than 70 songs. His most significant body of work for concert band consists of 11 suites composed between the years 1893 and 1925. These suites speak very much the same language as other American composers of the age such as Edward MacDowell, George Chadwick, and Arthur Foote, but Sousa, being a man whose livelihood depended on pleasing his audience, gave his music a flair which speaks of the energy and vitality of American life around the turn of the century. THREE QUOTATIONS, composed in 1895, is the second of Sousa’s suites for concert band, and was written to display the virtuosity of the Sousa Band while captivating the imagination of the audience. This edition by Mark Rogers has been carefully crafted using four different source materials and has been adapted for use for contemporary band practices and instrumentation. Movements: I. The King of France: With Twenty Thousand Men Marched up the Hill and then Marched Down Again, II. I, too, was born in Arcadia, III. In Darkest Africa
