“The Sesquicentennial Exposition of 1926 was held in Philadelphia, the occasion being the 150th anniversary of American independence. Sousa composed this march at the request of exposition officials and dedicated it to the mayor of Philadelphia, W. Freeland Kendrick.” -Paul E. Bierley, website of the U.S. Marine Corps Band.
