Written in celebration of the 100th birthday of the Statue of Liberty on October 28, 1986, Schifrin wrote: “In 1958, when I first came to this country, it was a very moving welcome for me to see her in the New York Harbor. I personally re-experienced those feelings some months ago when I was inspired to write this dedication and join today’s festivities around the nation.”
