Suite for String Orchestra on Old English Songs
Composers:- George, Thom Ritter
Duration: 12
Description:
This work was conceived so that all members of the string orchestra have interesting parts to play; melodic ideas are shared among all of the sections of the string orchestra. The composer was also interested in creating a score of high musical quality while keeping technical demands modest, allowing successful performances by groups ranging from middle school to professional level orchestras. The four movements are based on themes found in William Chappell’s “Popular Music of the Olden Time” (1859), a large compilation of English ballads, music printed on broadsides, and popular entertainments of the 160s and 1700s. Movements: 1. Under the Greenwood Tree, 2. There Was A Pretty Lass, 3. Mayfair, 4. Good Queen Bess
