mickey finn

Composers:
  • Crockett, Donald
Detailed Instrumentation: Violin Solo
Duration: 10
Description:

Recorded by Michelle Makarski and Ronald Copes, ECM 1871. The title “mickey finn” is taken from an American slang expression originating in the criminal Chicago underworld of the early 20th century. It refers to a drugged beverage slipped to an unsuspecting customer in a bar and hence, by extension, a double-cross, a sucker punch, a sudden and involuntary change of plans. “Mickey” is also a nickname for Michelle Makarski. All these senses are palpable in Crockett’s music, with its unexpected shifts of character and with its forthright mode of address that seems to fit perfectly its performer and dedicatee.
