  • Crockett, Donald
Detailed Instrumentation: Tenor Sax Solo, Flute, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Percussion, Harp, Violin, Viola, Violoncello
Duration: 6
Description:

The first movement of Extant was originally composed as a 10th anniversary gift for the Los Angeles-based new music ensemble, Xtet; I joined the group as composer and conductor in the late-80s. The piece was expanded to a 2-movement concerto for bassoon and eight players, featuring Xtet composer/bassoonist John Steinmetz, on a commission from the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University, and recorded on Albany Records. Fast forward to November 2021 when I did a residency at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; the faculty saxophonist, Shawna Pennock, suggested that this first movement would work well for tenor sax. Hence, Extant 1B for tenor saxophone and seven players. My thanks to Shawna for this most excellent idea. Extant 1B was premiered at UNLV on November 15, 2021 with Shawna Pennock soloist and the Nextet Chamber Players conducted by Tim Warren. – Donald Crockett.
