Symphony No. 3
Composers:- Sessions, Roger
Duration: 32
Description:
Both brilliant and precocious, Roger Sessions began taking piano lessons at age four and began his studies at Harvard at age fourteen. His music is complex, dense in texture, and intellectually severe. The third symphony, which plays out at about thirty-eight minutes in four movements, is conventionally structured but its thick texture and rhythmic complexity mask its structural features. Overall, the work is an effective example of twelve-tone symphonic writing. It is open in style and allows the listener to provide his or her own interpretation. As Sessions himself said of it: “It … arouses in the listener feelings which are moulded by the latter’s own experience.” -Description by Michael Morrison
