Description: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed the short work ELEGY (ELEGISCHER GESANG), Op. 118 in 1814. For mixed chorus and string quartet, it was written in honor of the death of philosopher and poet Johann Georg Jacobi. The text is by Johann Christoph Friedrich Haug, and is a setting of his poem “Bey der Kunde von Jacobi’s Tod.”
