Szenen aus Goethes Faust (Scenes from Goethe’s Faust)
Composers:- Schumann, Robert
Duration: 130
Description:
Written by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) between 1844 and 1853, Szenen aus Goethes Faust (Scenes from Goethe’s Faust) is a three-part work for vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra in the style of an oratorio. Following the overture, Schumann depicts various scenes from Goethe’s dramatic poem in an effort to depict the philosophical questions posed by Goethe’s magnum opus, combining elements of lied, opera, and oratorio in this exploration of the struggle between good and evil. It premiered in Cologne on January 13th, 1862. Considered one of Schumann’s most moving works, and perhaps his own magnum opus, Szenen aus Goethes Faust has seen a resurgence of interest since the 1970s.
