Notre Dame by Franz Schmidt (1874-1939) is a romantic opera, with libretto written by both the composer himself and Leopold Wilk, a professional chemist and amateur poet. Based loosely on the 1831 Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, the opera was premiered in Vienna in 1914. Best known for its Intermezzo and Carnival Music (which were written before the opera and later incorporated), Notre Dame was popular until the early 1920s before it faded from public performance. It has since been revived in Vienna and Dresden. Instrumentation: 2+Picc(dFl).2.2.2+CBsn: 4.3.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Hp(2): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
