  • Vaughan Williams, Ralph

Description:

Premiered as part of the 1910 Three Choirs Festival at Gloucester Cathedral, FANTASIA ON A THEME BY THOMAS TALLIS borrows the melody from the English Renaissance composer’s "Third Tune (Psalm 2)" of his 9 PSALM TUNES FOR ARCHBISHOP PARKER’S PSALTER. Full of mystical harmonies that have one foot in the Renaissance and another in the 20th-century, this richly textured fantasia for double string orchestra and a solo string quartet has entered the orchestral repertoire, with frequent concert performances and recordings around the world.
