“Shadow Play” has three movements played without pause: I. Quasi Cadenza, II. Slow Dance, and III. Very Fast. As the title suggests, it is a light-hearted, playful composition which nevertheless presents some unusual challenges for the ensemble, including extended synchonized cadenza-like passages in the opening movement that test the trio’s ability to follow its leader (…like a shadow), occasional flirtations with popular music idioms in the later movements that might be unfamiliar to those whose instruments have little or no traditional rolo in that style, and the challenge of sustaining the performance in the face of some unconscionably cheesy “borrowing” from a composition certain to be well-known and respected by the performers- and by many listeners as well.
