Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf’s (1739-1799) CONCERTO FOR DOUBLE BASS No. 2 in E major, Kr. 172 was composed in 1762, during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the court of the Prince-Bishop of Breslau, where he wrote a number of concertos for the court’s outstanding double bassist, Friedrich Pischelberger. Written at a time when the double bass was rarely featured as a solo instrument, the concerto is both technically demanding and lyrically expressive, showcasing the virtuosic possibilities of the instrument while retaining the elegance and wit of the Classical style.
