Villa-Lobos composed his sixth of nine operas in 1920. It was performed in the late nineteen-twenties in Rio de Janeiro, along with several other stage works. The Bailado Infernal (Infernal Dance), an excerpt from the opera, is a tempestuous showcase of the composer’s gift for color and atmosphere.
