This composition is based on the well-known hymn tune, LOBET DEN HERRN (PRAISE TO THE LORD) by Joachim Neander. FANTASIA ON ‘LOBET DEN HERRN’ was the First Price Winner of the Mount Union College Brass Choir Competition of 1986. The first major performance was given by the Mount Union College Brass Choir, Carl H. Kandel, director, on Easter Sunday, 1986, in the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. The FANTASIA, though written specifically for use as a prelude, postlude, or instrumental anthem in a church service, is nonetheless effective in concert performance.
