Hebrew Melodies, Op. 9
Composers:
Detailed Instrumentation: Viola and Piano- Joachim, Joseph
Duration: 15 minutes
Description: HEBREW MELODIES, Op. 9 (HEBRÄISCHE MELODIEN) was composed in the early 1850s (c. 1851–1852) by Joseph Joachim (1831–1907), reflecting the violinist-composer’s interest in Jewish themes at a time when Romantic composers were increasingly drawn to national and cultural identity in music. Inspired in part by the expressive spirit of Lord Byron’s Hebrew Melodies and by Joachim’s own heritage, the three-movement set explores a range of lyrical, dramatic, and declamatory moods, combining song-like cantabile writing with virtuosic restraint rather than display for its own sake. Today HEBREW MELODIES continues to hold a respected place in the viola repertoire. Reprint edition.
