- Goldman, Richard Franko
Duration: 5 minutes
Description: Karelia Suite, Op. 11, No. 3: Alla marcia, arranged for band by Richard Franko Goldman, originates from Jean Sibelius’s (1865–1957) Karelia music, composed in 1893 for a historical pageant celebrating Finnish heritage at a time of rising national identity under Russian rule. The Karelia Suite was extracted shortly thereafter from the larger incidental score and quickly became one of Sibelius’s most popular orchestral works. The closing movement, Alla marcia, evokes a ceremonial procession with bold rhythms and noble character, showcasing patriotic spirit and pageantry. The original suite premiered in 1893 in Helsinki, conducted by the composer. Richard Franko Goldman (1910–1980), a leading American bandmaster and advocate for wind band repertoire, later arranged the movement for concert band. Today Karelia Suite: Alla marcia in Goldman’s arrangement is a staple of the band repertoire. Reprint edition.
