Larghetto for Horn and Piano

Composers:
  • Chabrier, Emmanuel
Arrangers:
  • Labey, Marcel
Detailed Instrumentation: Horn and Piano
Duration: 9
Description:

Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), the French lawyer-turned-self-taught-composer wrote his LARGHETTO for Horn in 1875. Resembling an opera aria for French Horn, the work is very lyrical and achingly expressive, calling to mind a lament sung by an alto or tenor. The work was first performed on May 5, 1877, in Paris at Salle Pleyel, with Jean-Henri Garigue playing horn and accompanied by the orchestra of the Société nationale de musique. The work was not published in Chabrier’s lifetime, however, and it was only rediscovered amongst his possessions after he passed. This piano reduction by Marcel Labey was published in 1913, the same year that the orchestra version was published. Reprint edition.
