Using Gustav Holt’s great carol In the Bleak Midwinter, the composer has provided a picture of a medieval celebration. Opening with church bells and a distant fanfare, a chorale setting of the carol is followed by a festive round dance. The work concludes with a joyful combination of the carol melody and the dance tune.
