- Hall, Percy
Duration: 2 minutes
Description: Henry Work (1832-1884) was born in Middleton, Connecticut, and was a printer by trade and a songwriter by avocation. GRANDFATHER’S CLOCK is a sentimental song, typical of the popular songs of the mid-nineteenth century. The lyrics tell of the great joy the clock was for grandfather throughout his life. The clock was such a friend that it struck twenty-four when grandfather was married and stopped short after 99 years when grandfather passed away. This arrangement for woodwind quintet by Percy Hall, titled MY GRANDFATHER’S CLOCK STILL TICKS, mimics the clock on several occasions and presents the melody in several styles. There is no ritard at the end because grandfather is still alive, well, and going strong. His clock still ticks!
