Quartet No. 2 “Intimate Letters”

Composers:
  • Janacek, Leos
Detailed Instrumentation: Two Violins, Viola and Violoncello
Duration: 25
Description:

Leos Janácek’s (1854-1928) STRING QUARTET NO. 2 “INTIMATE LETTERS” was written in 1928. It was the second quartet the Bohemian Quartet had commissioned from Janácek. It was inspired by his long friendship with Kamila Stösslová, a married woman 38 years his junior with whom he exchanged more than 700 letters. It has been referred to as Janácek’s “manifesto on love”. It was not only dedicated to Stösslová, but the composer also stipulated in his will that she would receive all royalties. The work premiered a month before Janácek died on September 11, 1928 by the Moravian Quartet. Reprint edition.
