Description: The shofar is a trumpet or bugle made from the horn of a ram or other animal. It is an important part of Jewish religious celebration, and is mentioned frequently in the Old and New Testaments. Shofar was written as a celebration for the performance given by one of the composer’s students at a summer music clinic in 1992. The student played trumpet and gave a wonderful performance in spite of the many circumstances that made it difficult. The opening measures were conceived on the ride home and written on the back of an old insurance bill while driving. (Don’t try this yourself!) The solo in the middle of the work features trumpet, but can be played by other instruments as well. Includes educational supplement by David Newell.
