Description:

George Butterworth (1885-1916), an English composer whose life was cut short at the Battle of the Somme, wrote two song cycles based on A SHROPSHIRE LAD, a collection of 63 poems by A.E. Housman. The first of these cycles, published for baritone and piano in 1911, includes six songs: 1. Loveliest of trees (E Major); 2. When I was one and twenty (B minor); 3. Look not in my eyes (F Major); 4. Think no more, lad (G# minor); 5. The lads in their hundreds (F# Major); 6. Is my team ploughing? (G minor).
