Detailed Instrumentation: String Orchestra

Duration: 3 minutes

Description: Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was an Irish writer, poet and lyricist. Moore’s songs The Meeting of the Waters and The Minstrel Boy both reflect his deep emotional attachment to Ireland, but they do so in different ways. The Meeting of the Waters is gentle and lyrical, using the image of two rivers joining to symbolize harmony, love, and the peaceful beauty of the Irish landscape. In contrast, The Minstrel Boy is more dramatic and heroic, telling the story of a young musician who goes to battle and sacrifices his life for freedom, turning music into a symbol of national pride and resistance. Together, the songs show Moore’s range as a songwriter and poet, blending romantic imagery with powerful patriotic feeling to celebrate both the beauty and the struggles of Ireland.
