Concerto for Flute and Orchestra

Composers:
  • Diemer, Emma Lou
Detailed Instrumentation: Flute, Piano
Duration: 26
Description:

This work is representative of a “middle style” of the composer, displaying less complexity than her later works, but offering an opportunity for the unique purity and fluidity of the solo flute sound to flourish in a generally sympathetic and enhancing surrounding. The soloist in this piano reduction is called upon to display a fairly traditional virtuosic technique: rapid legato passage work; rhythmic, detached, and precise patterns of movement; and lyrical lines. This flute concerto with orchestra was composed in the summer of 1963 for Mark Thomas and premiered by him in February, 1964, with the Omaha Symphony conducted by Joseph Levine.
