Arthur Ephross

Bio:

Arthur J. Ephross is a third generation flutist and started playing at the age of eight under the tutelage of his father. His first professional teacher was George Penshorn who was a pupil of Maquarre and Barrere. He continued his studies at the New Englad Conservatory under George Laurent. After a fie year interruption caused by service during World War II in the Army Ground Forces Band, he continued at Boston University. This was followed by seven years in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and two seasons in the Boston Pops as well as experiece in recording and theatrical work. His experience as a flute teacher dates back 40 years and he ahs established a considerable reputation as a coach of woodwind ensembles. His articles have appeared in The Woodwind World, The Florida Music Educator, and The DeFord Digest. In 1960, Mr. Ephross became connected with the Theodore Presser Company as educational representative traveling throughout the Southeastern part of the country. In 1967 he assumed his present duties as Director of Publications for Southern Music Company which includes responsibility for selection, editing, autography, printing and distribution of all music published by that firm. Their catalogs consist largely of educational materials aimed at school bands and orchestras. Southern Music Company blieves itself to have the largest catalog of flute music in the world, as well as many educational editions for all wind and percussion instruments. Mr. Ephross has arranged 20 works, both at Theodore Presser and at Southern Music Company. He presently performs in the Southwest as a recitalist and as a member of the Chamber Arts Ensemble, a group of nine musicians, of which he is a founding member.
