Lawrence Weiner

Bio:

Native of Cleveland, Lawrence Weiner studied music at The University of Texas at Austin, where he received his bachelor?s and master?s degrees before going into the Army, where he played in the 4th U.S. Army Band at Fort Sam Houston. He stayed in San Antonio and began his teaching career at what is now Marshall high School as its choir director. From there, he went to Pat Neff Junior High School. In 1972, he received his doctorate of music from the University of Miami. Two years later, he went to teach at Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, now Texas A&M Corpus Christi. He worked as a professor ad continued composing music. Among his honors, he received an award fro he Texas Commission on the Arts for an opera, ?Chipita Rodriguez.? After he retired from teaching in 2003, he still kept composing music and the university named him a professor emeritus and composer-in-residence. Even in retirement, he continued to mentor others. His compositions are preserved in the Lawrence Weiner Collection at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at UT-Austin.
