Michael Cohen

Bio:

(Need birth month and date.) Michael Cohen was born in New York City. A graduate ofthe High School of Music and Art in 1955, the Dalcroze School of ‘iic, and a cum laude graduate from Brandeis University in 1959. He studied composition with Harold Shapero and Irving Fine. His diverse career as a composer includes works for chamber ensemble, musical theater, opera and television. A finalist in a New York City Opera Competition, Mr. Cohen’s Rappaccini’s Daughter was developed at the Eugene O,Neill Center and later at the Minnesota Opera. Yours, Anne, a music theater piece based on the Anne Frank diary opened in New York in 1985. I t has since been performed throughout the country and in England and Japan. Further work on this project resulted in two other forms: a song cycle entitled I Am Anne Frank and the chamber work, I Remember. I Am Anne Frank was performed at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with Andrea Marcovicci and the American Symphony Orchestra, and I Remember premiered at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. and released on CD by Newport Classics. Mr. Cohen scored and arranged A Passover Seder presented by Elie Weisel, seen nationally on PBS. He has received numerous commissions from the Concert Artists Guild, Serenata, Music Amici, the Manhattan Brass Quintet, and the trio Windsong. His composition, To Be A Child, was premiered at the Copland Heritage Society’s official opening of the Aaron Copland home to the public. Mr. Cohen is currently working on a song cycle with texts by Edna St.Vincent Millay to be premiered in July 2002 at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Maine.
