Description:

The development of the music that Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote for the orchestral suite, Op. 60, tells a complicated history. Originally, he and his librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal collaborated on a one-act opera based on Moliére’s play Le bourgeois gentilhomme, the initial version of Ariadne auf Naxos. Following an unsuccessful production in Stuttgart on October 25, 1912, they realized that the opera was too long and financially impractical. After the better-received appearance of the 1916 version, in which they had decided to cut the incidental music to the Moliere play, Hofmannsthal urged Strauss to rework it into the musical comedy DER BÜRGER ALS EDELMANN. This wartime production suffered a lukewarm reception when it premiered in Stuttgart in 1918. Two years later, Strauss gathered several extracts of music from the opera into a suite for orchestra which found a warm reception when he himself conducted the Vienna premiere on January 31, 1920. Instrumentation: 2(d.Picc).2(2nd d.EH).2.2(2nd d.CBsn): 2.1.1.0: Timp.Perc(5): Hp.Pno: Str (4-4.4-4.2-2-2.2-2-2.5). Study score.
