Description: After the defeat of Napoleon during his 1813 campaign, German patriotism surged in popularity. This trend exhibited a heavy influence on the poetry and music of the time. In 1814, Friedrich Treitschke penned a patriotic opera, DIE GUTE NACHRICHT, on which several Viennese composers collaborated, including Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). He contributed the music for the closing number, a song celebrating German courage in five patriotic verses. The first performance of GERMANIA, WoO 94, took place on April 11, 1814 at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna.
