Description:

JOSEPHS-LEGENDE, OP. 63/ TRV 231 is a one-act ballet that Richard Strauss (1864-1949) composed for the Ballets Russes at the suggestion of his librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. As he struggled to invest himself in the subject of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife, the process of writing the music gave him a considerable amount of difficulty. It premiered at the Paris Opera on May 14, 1914, under the direction of the composer. In 1947, he extracted a symphonic fragment of music from the ballet, TRV 231A. Max Reiter conducted the first performance of this version for reduced orchestra on February 26, 1949. Instrumentation: 3(3rd d. Picc).2+EH.2+BCl.3+CBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp. Perc(4): 2Hp.Cel.Org. Pno: Str (6-5-5.3-3.3-3.5 in set).
