Description: After a three-year hiatus, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) returned to the symphonic form with SYMPHONY NO. 38 IN D MAJOR, K. 504, toward the end of 1786. Completing it on December 6, he dispensed with the usual minuet and trio. To fill out the three-movement structure, he added one of the most expansive slow introductions that had yet been written for a symphony. It is frequently called the “PRAGUE” since its premiere took place in the midst of his first trip to the Bohemian city on January 19, 1787. Instrumentation: 2.2.0.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set).
