Description:

PRELUDE AND SCHERZO, Op. 11 is a work for string octet by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Originally intending to create a five-movement suite in December 1924, he changed his mind the following year and replaced the fugue he had written with a scherzo to compliment the initial prelude. The two movements reveal a young, modernistic composer with its rhythmic drive and spiky dissonance. It is dedicated to the memory of his friend, the poet Vladimir Kurchavov. This Kalmus edition is here arranged for string orchestra by Lucas Drew. Instrumentation: 4Vn, 2Va, 2Vc, CB (4+4.4+4.3+2.3+2.5 in set).
