Description:

LA CRÉATION DU MONDE (THE CREATION OF THE WORLD), Op. 81a is a ballet by Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), composed to a libretto by Blaise Cendrars, which outlines the creation of the world based on African folk mythology. After hearing jazz music on the streets of Harlem, Milhaud finished composing LA CRÉATION DU MONDE using jazz elements. The work was commissioned by the Ballets suédois and premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris on October 25, 1923. Today this piece has been established in the concert repertoire.
