Duration: 19 minutes

Description: One of the most highly regarded clarinet works in the repertoire, Carl Maria von Weber’s (1786-1826) CONCERTO FOR CLARINET No. 1, J.114/Op. 73 was written in 1811 for famed clarinetist Heinrich Bärmann. Written after the CONCERTINO FOR CLARINET AND ORCHESTRA in E-flat, Op. 26 and CONCERTO FOR CLARINET No. 2, J.118/Op. 74, also composed for Bärmann, show that Weber had a complete understanding of the instrument’s capabilities. The first concerto departs from the lighter, playful nature of the CONCERTINO with a much more serious, almost operatic, expression. The work premiered on June 13, 1811, in Munich with Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria in the audience. Instrumentation: 2.2.0.2: 3.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Clarinet.
