Description: Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) composed L’AMORE MEDICO (DOCTOR CUPID) in 1913, a one-act comic opera based on Molière’s play “L’amour médecin”. Premiered in Dresden on December 4 of that year under, the opera exemplifies Wolf-Ferrari’s gift for combining Italian lyricism with the refined orchestral craftsmanship of the German tradition. The “Intermezzo” from L’AMORE MEDICO distills the opera’s charm into an elegant orchestral miniature, characterized by graceful melodies, delicate humor, and luminous textures that reflect the light-hearted spirit of the stage work. Written at the height of Wolf-Ferrari’s popularity in the early twentieth century, the piece captures his signature blend of wit and warmth, evoking the comic sensibility of Molière’s original with a distinctly modern touch. Today, while L’AMORE MEDICO itself is rarely staged, its “Intermezzo” endures as a concert favorite. Instrumentation: 2.2+EH.2+BCl.2: 4.1.0.0: Timp: Hp: Str(9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Vc in set.
