AN ALPINE SYMPHONY (EINE ALPENSINFONIE), Op. 64, is a tone poem for large orchestra composed by Richard Strauss (1864–1949). One of Strauss’s most expansive non-operatic works, the score requires a massive ensemble of 125 musicians. The composition depicts a journey through the Alps, portraying the experience from daybreak to nightfall as one climbs the mountain. AN ALPINE SYMPHONY premiered in Berlin on October 28, 1915.
