Description:

While it scandalized Parisian audiences at its premiere by the OpĂ©ra-Comique in Paris on March 3rd, 1875, Georges Bizet’s (1838-1875) CARMEN became, a mere decade later, one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the repertoire. It remains popular today, with songs such as the Habanera and Toreador Song among the best known of all opera arias. “Micaela’s Air” (Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante) appears in Act III as the young village girl searches for Don JosĂ© in the mountains. Alone and fearful of the smugglers who surround her, Micaela gathers her courage through prayer, asking God to give her strength to confront Carmen and rescue JosĂ© from her influence. The aria contrasts Micaela’s purity and innocence with Carmen’s fiery sensuality, highlighting her steadfast devotion and quiet bravery. Lyrical, tender, and imbued with heartfelt sincerity, it provides one of the opera’s most poignant and touching moments, offering a glimpse of moral clarity amid the drama’s turbulence. Instrumentation: 2.1+EH.2.2: 4.0.1.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Sop. Reprint edition.
