Description:

Italian composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), the first known owner of a Stradivarius violin, composed at least 135 violin concerti and at least 100 violin sonatas in his lifetime, among a few other works not for the violin. While the fact that he never dated his manuscripts nor cataloged revisions makes it very difficult to catalog his works, scholars have created systems to at least categorize his output based on the stylistic characteristics of his music. This CONCERTO FOR CELLO No. 87 in A, GT 1.A28 (Canale 1.2.A.01) is among the select works Tartini did not write for violin, and the only known concerto for cello by Tartini, likely written for Antonio Vandini, the first cellist of the Chiesa del Santo (Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua) where Tartini was first violinist for many years. While the work is, overall, energetic, the solo cello part presents itself more discreetly and almost shyly at times, largely due to being written in the middle range of the instrument. Instrumentation: Hpchd: Str (4.4.4.4.2 in set): Solo Cello in set. Reprint of the edition arranged and edited by Rolf van Leyden (1892-1967).
