Description: Spanish Basque composer Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (1806-1826) was nicknamed “the Spanish Mozart” after he died because he and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart shared the status of a child prodigy and accomplished composer that died young. Arriaga composed an opera entitled LOS ESCLAVOS FELICES (THE HAPPY SLAVES) in 1820, when he was only 14, with a Spanish libretto by Luciano Francisco Comella. A semi-serious work in two acts, only the Overture, the Marcha Mora, the Cavatina de Elvira, and the Dúo de Alfonso y Elvira have survived. The opera was produced in Bilbao.
