- Gottschalk, Louis Moreau
- McDermott, William
Duration: 10 minutes
Description: Grand Tarantelle, Op. 67 / D. 66 (“Célèbre Tarantelle”) was composed in the late 1850s (c. 1858) by Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829–1869), the pioneering American virtuoso pianist whose music blended European Romanticism with Caribbean and Latin American influences. Written during his extensive travels in the Americas, the work showcases Gottschalk’s flair for brilliant, crowd-pleasing concert pieces, combining the rapid, whirling rhythms of the Italian tarantella with dazzling pianistic display. Originally conceived for solo piano, it was later expanded by the composer into a version for piano and orchestra. The piece was frequently performed by Gottschalk himself in his international concert tours, where it became one of his signature showpieces. Grand Tarantelle remains a staple of the virtuoso piano repertoire, especially in its orchestral version. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.2.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Pno in set. The solo piano part also includes a piano reduction of the orchestral score for rehearsal or for performance in a piano duo setting. This edition has been orchestrated by William Mcdermott, based on versions for piano 2-hands, piano 4-hands, and two pianos.
