Description:

Jean-Philippe Rameau’s (1683-1764) LES INDES GALANTES, RCT 44, first performed at the Paris OpĂ©ra in 1735, is a genre-defying opĂ©ra-ballet that blends dance, vocal spectacle, and exotic fantasy. Comprising a prologue and four independent acts (or “entrĂ©es”), the work explores the theme of love in faraway lands—ranging from Turkey and Peru to Persia and North America—reflecting Enlightenment-era curiosity and romantic idealization of the “exotic.” Although it fell into relative obscurity after Rameau’s death, it has enjoyed a significant revival since the 20th century, thanks to historically informed performance practices and its dramatic theatricality. In 1895, a version of SUITE NO. 1, edited by Paul Dukas, was published under the direction of Camille Saint-SaĂ«ns, here presented in this Kalmus edition. Movements: 1. Marche; 2. Menuet; 3. Danse des sauvages; 4. Chaconne. Instrumentation: 2.2.0.2: 0.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
