Description:

Spuriously attributed to Mozart, the MASS IN G is a work for chorus and orchestra by Wenzel Müller (1767-1835). The most prolific opera composer, with 166 operas to his name, he also wrote art songs and music for the church. Published by Novello in 1819 as Mozart’s MASS NO. 12, the work appeared in a Simrock edition for full orchestra in 1821. The mass had grown to enormous popularity by the middle of the nineteenth century. Regardless, Ludwig Köchel rejected the Mozart attribution in his own catalogue. More recently, Müller was brought forth as the probable composer and its likely date of composition between Mozart’s death and the first mention of the mass in a library record in 1803. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Mx Chor.
