Rock, The (Fantasy for Orchestra), Op. 7 (Utyos)
Composers:- Rachmaninoff, Sergei
Duration: 10
Description:
THE ROCK (UTYOS), Op. 7 is a symphonic poem composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) in 1893 when he was just 20 years old, and it premiered in Moscow in 1894 under the baton of Vasily Safonov. Inspired by a poetic image from Lermontov and the short story “Along the Way” by Anton Chekhov, the piece evokes a dramatic encounter between a weary traveler and a stern cliff during a snowstorm, symbolizing the contrast between fleeting human emotion and eternal nature. Richly orchestrated, it foreshadows the lush Romanticism of his later works, while also paying homage to Tchaikovsky, who praised it. Though not as frequently performed as his concertos or symphonies, THE ROCK has secured a modest place in the orchestral repertoire, appreciated today for its youthful intensity and atmospheric storytelling. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
