Description: Johan Severin Svendsen (1840-1911) composed his ROMANCE in G major, Op. 26, in 1881, a lyrical work for violin and orchestra that remains one of the most beloved pieces in Norwegian Romantic repertoire. The ROMANCE premiered in the same year in Kristiania (now Oslo) with violinist Stanislaw Barcewicz and Svendsen conducting. Cast in a single movement, the work unfolds as a tender dialogue between soloist and orchestra, its heartfelt melody and warm harmonic writing reflecting both Svendsen’s lyrical gift and his deep affinity for the violin. Although modest in scale, the ROMANCE captures a sincerity of expression and melodic beauty comparable to Grieg’s most intimate works. Today, it stands as one of Svendsen’s most enduring compositions, cherished by violinists and audiences alike for its simplicity, emotional warmth, and quintessentially Scandinavian sense of poetic nostalgia. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Vn in set. Reprint edition. Solo part revised and fingered by Gustav Saenger.
