Description:

SERENADE No. 12 in C minor, K. 388/384a, written for eight wind instruments, was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) in 1782 or 1783. While serenades (or Harmoniemusik) at the time were generally written as “dinner music” and meant to be light-hearted, such as Mozart’s previous wind octet, SERENADE No. 11 in E-flat, K. 375, his SERENADE No. 12 is unique in its use of a minor key. Nothing is known about why Mozart chose to write a work that departed so much from the style’s norm, nor do we know when it was first performed, but he found it worthwhile enough to later transcribe it himself as the STRING QUINTET, K. 406/516b. Instrumentation: 0.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0. Reprint of Gustav Nottebohm’s 1880 edition, included in the Mozarts Werke.
