Description:

SYMPHONY NO. 4, known as LE POÈME DE L’EXTASE (THE POEM OF ECSTASY), is a single-movement work for large orchestra by Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915). Composed near Genoa between 1905 and 1908, the piece reflects his fascination with mysticism and Nietzschean philosophy, depicting a soul’s escape to a higher plane of spiritual consciousness. Referencing a connection between the transcendental and the erotic in his own poem upon which the work was based, he originally intended to call it POÈME ORGIAQUE. When the composer performed a piano version for a gathering of several Russian musical figures, they were puzzled by its daring ambiguity. The first performance took place in New York City on December 10, 1908. Instrumentation: 3+Picc.3+EH.3+BCl.3+CBsn: 8.5.3.1: Timp.Perc(5-6): Clst.Org.2Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
