Three Divertimenti, K. 136-138/125a-c (Salzburg Symphony Nos. 1-3)

Composers:
  • Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus
Detailed Instrumentation: String Orchestra (4-4-3-3-3 in set) or String Quartet
Duration: 43
Description:

In 1772, a 16 year old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) wrote 7 of his 41 symphonies. Having just returned from a trip to Italy with his father where he had been commissioned to write a serenata for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand and Beatrice D’Este, his return home resulted in a year of composing. In addition to the symphonies, Mozart wrote three divertimenti, a largely minor work for most other composers, but which Mozart elevated to the complexity found in the fairly new symphonic form. The three divertimenti from 1772, K136 – K138, are often called his ā€œSalzburg Symphonies.ā€ They may be performed as either a string orchestra or as a string quartet. Study score.
